Safe, systematic instruction for beginners!

I’ve talked to a lot of people who say they’ve “always wanted to study martial arts,” but they weren’t sure how to get started. We get calls from people who are scared they’ll get hurt. Sometimes they’re nervous because they haven’t done it before and they’re not sure how it will go. Or maybe they simply don't know how to get started.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could come in and try out martial arts in a step-by-step manner with experts guiding you every step of the way?

Wouldn't it be great if you knew that you wouldn’t be asked to do anything too challenging or dangerous unless you were well prepared for it?

I bet you can imagine a day when you’ll be able to practice comfortably alongside other martial artists, joyfully engaged in the learning process, confident about defending yourself, becoming stronger, faster, and more focused, or just being more fit and balanced. But sometimes it's tough to see how you'll get from where you are today to where you want to be!

Find Out How We Help Beginners Get Into the Martial Arts

Here at the Delaware Judo & Ju-Jitsu Association, we help beginners get started in a safe, systematic way. You can come in and watch a class with no obligation or pressure. You’ll see beginners, intermediate students and advanced martial artists in the same class, so you can compare what the experts are doing with what you’ll be doing on your first day. When you’ve seen a class and you’re ready to “take a test drive,” you can arrange for two private lessons with one of our black-belt instructors.

Intro lessons at DJJA are absolutely free and without obligation. You get to try out what we do, experience our teaching, and get used to the environment. We move forward in a safe, systematic way, making sure our instruction fits your ability and your confidence level. After the intro lessons are over, we’ll explain what it takes to get started in our dojo, but we won’t pressure you. We want students at DJJA who truly want to be here, so we’ll give you the information you need, and then let you decide.

Questions We Get Asked by Martial Arts Beginners

Will I have to fight?

No! Many of our students are grown ups who practice martial arts for health and long term self-improvement. We challenge each of them according to their ability and fitness level. You don’t have to spar unless (a) you feel ready; and (b) we think you're ready.

Do I have to get in shape before I start?

No! Part of our process is figuring out your fitness level and making sure we help you learn while gradually improving your fitness.

Will I get locked into a long contract when I start?

No! If you want to get started after your intro lessons, we’ll ask you to sign a membership.
